Tips And Measures: How Can Prevent Electrical Fires?

Electrical fires were involved in an average of 47,820 reported home structure fires from 2007 to 2011, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Almost half of all electrical fires in residential structures (48%) involve some electrical distribution equipment, such as cables, sockets, switches, lamps,  bulbs, cables, or sockets. Electrical fires are not only dangerous but they can also be prevented.

Preventing Electrical Fires

The following pointers can assist you in identifying a potential fire hazard and preventing an electrical fire in your home or business:

  1. Inspect electrical wiring:

To avoid electrical fires, have your electrical wiring inspected. Because wiring does not last forever, it is a good idea to have it checked if your home is more than ten years old.

  1. Inspect and replace old wiring:

If a power cord or your home's wiring is frayed, worn out, or tattered, consider repairing or replacing it to avoid an electrical fire.

  1. Inspect electrical appliance plugs:

Plugs, like wiring, can fray and rip. Broken plugs can not only cause a shock, but they can also spark.

  1. Keep flammable materials away:

Electrical appliances or outlets that come into contact with flammable materials, such as a blanket, rug, or cleaning supplies, can start a fire.

  1. Use surge protectors:

Surge protectors shield appliances and anything else plugged into an outlet from the dangers of a power surge.

  1. Be cautious of certain appliances:

If an appliance blows a fuse, trips a circuit, or sparks while in use, unplug it immediately and determine whether it needs to be repaired or replaced.
